How do you remove moss from offshore rigs without damaging the steel?

We use high-pressure hydroblasting with controlled pressure levels, typically between 1,500 and 2,800 bar depending on the surface and the thickness of the growth. The nozzle angle and standoff distance are set so the water jet strips moss, barnacles, and scale without cutting into the base metal. After the wash, we apply a corrosion inhibitor while the surface is still clean, which stops flash rust from forming before the protective coating goes on.

What is the typical timeline for a port facility cleaning project?

A standard berth section with moderate biofouling takes two to three days of on-site work, including setup and safety checks. Larger terminals with heavy growth across multiple piers are usually scheduled in phases, so your operations keep running while we clear one zone at a time. We give you a concrete day-by-day plan before the crew arrives, and we adjust the sequence around your vessel movements.

Do you work while the rig or port is still operational?

Yes, in most cases we can work around live operations. For offshore rigs, we coordinate with the platform manager to isolate the work area and schedule cleaning during maintenance windows. At ports, we work in sections and use containment barriers to keep water spray away from loading equipment and pedestrian routes. If a full shutdown is required for safety, we flag that clearly during the site assessment.

What causes moss and marine growth to come back so quickly?

In tropical Malaysian waters, the combination of warm surface temperature, high humidity, and constant salt spray creates ideal conditions for biofouling. If the old growth is not fully removed down to the bare steel, the remaining spores and organic residue re-colonize within weeks. Our process removes the root layer completely and then applies a protective treatment that slows reattachment, so the interval between cleanings is much longer than with standard washing.

Can you handle corrosion that has already started under the moss?

Yes. When we strip the moss layer, we inspect the exposed steel for pitting and surface rust. If the corrosion is still in the early stages, we clean the affected area and apply a marine-grade anti-corrosion primer. For deeper pitting, we document the damage and recommend a repair plan before the protective coating is applied. We do not cover up existing corrosion with a fresh coat of paint.

We need access to the work area, a safe water supply with adequate flow, and a point for disposing of the wash water and removed organic material.
